11 Things to Look for in Senior Independent Living

JEA 7 6 11 Things to Look for in IL

You’re getting older but you’re in pretty good health compared to a lot of other people your age. You want an active lifestyle without having to worry about household chores. And you’re realizing that your current home isn’t a good fit for you anymore.

You don’t need “care”, but easy access to health and wellness services and a 24-hour on-site emergency response wouldn’t hurt.

If this describes your situation, then senior independent living may be for you.

What is senior independent living?

Active seniors generally move to independent living communities because they’re looking for new experiences, chances to meet new friends, and opportunities to join engaging groups and clubs. To them, moving to an independent living community is about focusing on what’s important in life; less on trying to keep up a home that’s too big for them, more on plugging into the life of an active community.

They may continue to do their own cooking or take advantage of dining options within the community – or a combination of both. They also like to do their own thing when it suits them, getting out to stores, restaurants, and theatres. Maybe they still like to entertain family and friends at home.

They don’t need care or help with day-to-day activities like bathing or dressing, but it’s nice to know that it’s available should they need it in the future.

Finding a good independent living community

Of course, not all senior living communities are created equal. That’s why it’s important to do your homework.

Here are some questions you might want to ask as you check out specific communities:

  1. Do the suites come with a full kitchen? Is there a meal plan that you can join if you choose to? How flexible is it?
  2. What’s the cost range? What’s included and what’s available for an extra fee?
  3. Are housekeeping services available? At what price?
  4. What sort of activities are available on-site (e.g. fitness, clubs, activities, dining)?
  5. Is there space to entertain family and other visitors?
  6. What sorts of health services are available in case you need them?
  7. How secure is the building? What’s the neighborhood like? What sorts of shopping, green space, and attractions are close by?
  8. If you have a car, is parking available? Is transportation provided for shopping or social outings?
  9. Are pets allowed?
  10. If you need care in the future, what are your options?
  11. How does the community help new residents settle in?
