After careful consideration, we may even discover that we’re better able to achieve those priorities by moving to an independent senior living community and taking advantage of the more carefree lifestyle it offers older adults.
What is an independent living community?
Independent living communities are for seniors who are active and mobile, who are looking for a more convenient lifestyle, more social opportunities, and amenities and services that make life easier and more enjoyable. Independent living communities can take many forms: apartments, cottages, townhouses, or single detached houses. Whatever form they take, independent living homes include senior-friendly design and safety features that make it easier to age in place.
When is a move to independent living the right decision?
Deciding whether to move from your current home to an independent living community often boils down to one question: Where can I best live the retirement lifestyle I want – in my current home or in an independent living community?
To help you answer that question, think about responsibilities and chores that you’re currently taking care of yourself such as:
- Grocery shopping
- House cleaning
- Cooking
- Yard work
- Household repairs
- Laundry
- Daytime driving
- Nighttime driving
- Errands
- Coordinating necessary services
Take each of these responsibilities into consideration. How many of the things on this checklist do you still enjoy doing? How many of them are you ready to let go?
If you’d prefer to let someone else take care of some of them for you, even if it’s only a few of them, then independent living may be a good fit for you.
