So much to explore
Texans say “Everything’s bigger in Texas,” and the manmade waterfall at Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park is no exception! This 64-foot-tall semi-circular structure recycles 46,500 gallons of water in the inner fountain and 35,000 gallons in the outer fountain at a rate of 11,000 gallons per minute, a must-see icon in uptown Houston. Or take the grandkids to the Downtown Aquarium which features a 500,000 gallon aquarium as well as an amusement park, great restaurants, shopping and exhibits.
For an awe-inspiring look at mother nature on the wing, visit the Waugh Drive Bridge over the Buffalo Bayou and see an estimated 250,000 bats swooping out from under the bridge into the dusk on warm winter evenings. Shoppers will love the Galleria Mall for high-end retailers and restaurants as well as Galveston’s Kemah Boardwalk for great shopping, dining and a full amusement park right on Galveston Bay. Get back to the ranching roots of Texas at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, held each spring with everything from livestock competitions to classic rodeo events to bowling and barbecue competitions.
So much great food
Retirement in the Katy-Houston area draws a lot of foodies, both for great dining and lots and lots of fresh food. One option is Urban Harvest Farmers Market offering fresh produce, meats and more as well as supporting more than 100 local growers and vendors and teaching people to grow their own. The Farmers’ Market on Grand Parkway has farm-fresh produce, eggs, honey, meat and poultry, nuts, baked goods, and a variety for homemade and handmade products each Saturday. And when it comes to dining, you’ll find everything from Texas barbecue to South African cuisine. Seafood boils. Dim sum. Brazilian grilled meat. Creole favorites like gumbo and crawfish étouffée. Steakhouses, Mexican, pizza, country cooking, and more. And don’t forget dessert: it could be anything from whiskey cake to churros to gooey chocolate chip cookies.
