Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our way of life has changed drastically. Gone are the days of dining in at restaurants, or going to a movie or play. Even recreational activities have been impacted in order to stop the spread. Furthermore, supply chains have been severely disrupted which has decreased access to consumer goods. First toilet paper, bleach wipes, eggs, bread, and milk were nowhere to be found. Then prices for items like cereal, cookies, seafood, and poultry started to spike. This is a stark contrast to just a few months ago when life seemed slower and easier, in a pre-COVID-19 world. Although these challenges affect everyone, everyone is not impacted by the same measure. Those at greatest risk, are also those with the greatest restrictions and most limited access to vital supplies such as personal-protective-equipment (PPE). This group of individuals includes American Seniors over the age of 60 and those with underlying conditions who also reside in a senior living community.
While many conflate Nursing Homes and Senior Living Communities, the two are quite different from one another. Senior Living Communities include a broad range of living options for seniors including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and continuing care. And while both are vital, Senior Living Communities to date, have not received any government assistance in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in their facilities. Nursing Homes have received priority access to personal protective equipment (PPE), greater access to testing, and additional financial support. This is all in addition to their government reimbursement for the care of their residents from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This prioritization of funding and supplies have made it difficult for essential Senior Living providers to obtain vital and mandatory PPE. In order to enhance their bargaining power with suppliers, Senior Living Communities quickly banded together to obtain ample PPE reserves to keep their residents and staff safe as they serve on the frontlines of the pandemic.
In order to provide residents and staff with the necessary equipment for their health and wellbeing, Sinceri Senior Living is proud to support, Standing with Seniors, the advocacy campaign efforts of Argentum to encourage Congress to prioritize Senior Living in the federal response to COVID-19. This campaign is focused on directing support from the latest legislative package towards senior living communities to help protect and care for the vulnerable population of American Seniors.
