With so much to do and see when you choose retirement in the Katy-Houston Area, you want to be sure you can enjoy it all. That’s why staying fit is so important. And the good news is you don’t have to run a marathon or take up bungee jumping to do it.
In fact, at Sinceri Senior Living, we have some tips on how this special part of Texas makes it easy for you to stay fit, active, and engaged. Ready to get started?
Why staying fit in retirement is so important
Just 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity activity can have big payoffs for adults over the age of 65. You can break that down to 30 minutes a day, five days a week. It can be a brisk walk. Hiking a trail. Running. Working out in a gym. Add two days to focus on strength and you’ve got a fitness plan that will pay off for you.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, staying fit:
- Helps reduce the risk of falling and fracturing bones
- Reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure, colon cancer and diabetes
- Can help reduce blood pressure
- Reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression
- Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints
- Helps control pain associated with arthritis
The bottom line: you want to keep moving so you can stay on track for healthy aging and longevity. As a resident of Sinceri Senior Living, you’re in the perfect place to do just that.

Retirement in the Katy-Houston area makes it easy to stay fit
Fitness centers & swimming pools
Stay in shape at one of the many local gyms that include Bona Fitness and Wellness in Katy, with diverse workouts, as well as massage, stretch and chiropractic therapy, nutrition counseling, circuit training and more. Sled Fitness in Houston offers personalized, small group and online training.
If you are more of a swimmer, the Harris County Aquatics Center in Houston offers adult programs including laps, water aerobics and Aqua-Zumba, or try one of the almost 40 public city pools throughout Houston.
Strength training
Staying strong helps prevent osteoporosis and frailty by stimulating the growth of muscle and bone. At Starting Strength Gym, you are assigned a coach that is responsible for your progress. Your coach is there to decide what exercises to perform, how to perform them, what weight to use, and how much to rest in between sets.
Gentler workouts
Yoga is a wonderful way to increase flexibility and range of motion, while helping loosen stiff joints. Try Evergreen Yoga in Katy or Bird on a Perch Pilates Studio in Houston. Tai Chi is also helpful with relaxation, as well as helping build better balance through gentle movements. Body & Brain is one option; check out Four Dragons Institute for their schedule of free Tai Chi classes in Houston parks.
Walking trails
Walking trails abound and are a big reason so many seniors choose retirement in the Katy-Houston area. In Katy, check out Mason Creek South Hike & Bike Trail, a 2.6 mile paved trail with exercise stations. Mary Jo Peckham Park is a 0.8-mile trail for a shorter walk. There is an additional outer trail off the path with small elevation changes.
On a hot day in Houston, wander the 2.5-mile loop trail through the shady Purple and Red Loop or try one of the 14 trails in Memorial Park through diverse natural settings.
Engaging with others is also staying fit
Staying mentally and emotionally fit is a vital part of healthy aging. A big part of this is spending time with people you enjoy in activities, classes, programs, and more. Luckily, retirement in the Katy-Houston area provides countless opportunities to engage and connect.
For example, the city of Katy Fussell Senior Center offers activities and programs to serve older Americans and others. Active seniors enjoy a full schedule of fun and games, exercise and health checks, day trips and movies, crafts, parties, holiday celebrations, dining out and much more. The goal is to provide seniors with programs and activities that stimulate their hearts, minds, physical well-being and in turn, encourage them to maintain an independent and productive lifestyle.
