The Katy-Houston Area’s local festivals seniors can enjoy
Honoring the rice industry and its hardworking farmers, one of the top Katy-Houston area’s top festivals is the Katy Rice Harvest Festival held the second weekend of October for three days in historic downtown Katy. Enjoy a parade, diverse vendors, live international music, food trucks, a beer garden and a carnival.
The annual Houston Shakespeare Festival uses Shakespeare’s works to draw together our diverse community to explore our common humanity. Two plays are presented each summer season; each is free to the public in the Miller Outdoor Theater in Herman Park. This event has become one of the major events on Houston’s summer entertainment calendar.
For a fun day with international flavor, the Colombian Fest Internacional in Downtown Houston celebrates the Colombian Independence Day with traditional music performances, as well as dancing, food, arts and crafts, and vendors. One of the liveliest of all the Katy-Houston area’s local festivals.
Another great option in Houston is the First Saturday Arts Market each month May through September. Dozens of visual artists showcase their work in this “micro” art festival. Located in historic Houston Heights, visitors to this free event will find friendly artists with paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and many more popular art mediums. Houston Winery and Houston Cider Co., both located in the Heights, have wine and cider offerings and there is always a popular food truck on site. Music is provided by local entertainers.
“From the swamps and woods of the back country, to the music-filled streets to New Orleans,” the rich Cajun culture comes to Katy in this fun event, a crowd favorite of the Katy-Houston area’s local festivals. Celebrate the uniquely invigorating bayou culture at the Katy Cajun Invasion, a three-day festival in mid- May with family-friendly food, music and carnival rides. Since food is a huge part of Cajun culture, there is always plenty at the invasion: boiled crawfish, crabs, shrimp, jambalaya, boudin, étouffée, and fried alligator tail.

For Texas natives and those who have adopted the state, the San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Re-Enactment might be the most important of all the Katy-Houston area’s local festivals. Reenactors dressed in period clothing will make the epic events of April 21, 1836, come alive, and reenactments throughout the day will recreate the dramatic events that led to one of the most decisive and impactful military victories in the history of North America.
Step back in time to revolutionary Texas! Hands-on, participatory activities will let you interact with reenactors as they cook food, check weapons, and engage in the daily routines of soldiers and civilians from almost 200 years ago. All activities are family friendly and include fun activities just for kids. Drop in all day long at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site.
Candles and decorations reminiscent of the 19th century brighten the eight historic structures in downtown Houston’s Sam Houston Park for the Christmas holiday.
